Epic beauty and vast landscapes await you in Bulgaria. Untamed mountains, a rich history, pristine lakes and architecturally stunning buildings blend magnificently into this wonderful and underrated country.
For lovers of the great outdoors, be prepared to be left speechless! Head for the hills and explore the hiking trails in Bulgaria’s rugged mountainscapes. Access untouched wilderness hiking between mountain huts, conquer Botev Peak; the highest peak in the Central Balkan National Park, picnic next to sparkling glacial lakes or race down biking trails on Rila Mountain. For you snow babies, check out the lively town of Bansko for the country’s longest ski runs.
Scattered around Bulgaria are over 200 monasteries. Rising out of a forested valley in the Rila Mountains is the 10th-century Rila Monastery which draws visitors and pilgrims from far and wide to bask in its splendour. This iconic landmark is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and houses an extraordinary collection of religious art. If you’re a fan of art, don’t miss the beautiful and intricate St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral in Sofia. This architectural masterpiece is the second-largest cathedral in the Balkan region and was once one of the world’s largest Eastern Orthodox churches.
Be sure to check out some of Bulgaria’s cities. Plovdiv is completely charming and you’ll quickly fall under its spell. Step back in time in the romantic Old Town where you’ll find colourful museums, elegant revival-era townhouses and galleries sitting in peaceful silence. In the evening, get lost in the city’s labyrinth of cobbled streets lined with hipster cafes, art galleries, boutiques, dining and nightlife. Explore Sofia, Bulgaria’s laidback, modern capital city home to huge parks and some of the country’s top restaurants, bars, museums and galleries.
